How to create the Perfect Garden

If you have wondered why your neighbor has such a beautiful
garden while yours looks tired it could be for any number
of reasons. Gardening is a commitment that takes a lot of
patience, and lots of care, to ensure that is just the way
you like it. People spend different amounts of time in
their gardens - some spend time each day. If you don't
have time, then even if you hire a gardener or caretaker
to come in regularly you will still need a plan.

If your home is new, then your back yard probably consists
of a slab of lawn and there is little or no fencing. This
gives you a great opportunity to plan your garden from
scratch. But you need to start early, as plants take many
years to grow and mature.

You can approach the process by drawing a plan of your
backyard on graph paper and sketching in the areas where
you will want to plant gardens and shrubs, place paths and
fences and build a shed. You might even choose to have
flower gardens as well as herbs and vegetable gardens,
depending on the size of the garden space. You must plan
all of this so that as the trees and other larger plants
grow, they will not block sunlight from other plants in
your yard.

If you visit a local landscape and shrubbery sales lot,
they employ people who can help you out with selecting
various plants, trees and vegetables. They can offer you
very useful advice on planting and companion gardening and
if you visit these stores during the week when they are not
so busy, they can spend more time explaining things to you
and giving you good advice.

Once you have chosen your plants, you can either plant them
yourself, which is very rewarding as you watch them grow
over time, or you can have a garden expert do it for you.
Just remember, if you do it yourself, you'll get some great
exercise as well as knowing that you can watch all of your
plants grow!

Now that everything is planted, you cannot afford to sit
back and relax. Plants need to be watered, gardens weeded
and fertilized, mulch added around the plants and as time
goes on trimming to keep everything growing just the way
you would like.

The tendency of new home gardeners is to plant to many
shrubs and trees. The reason for this is that everything is
relatively small in size initially and you want immediate
gratification with all areas filled in to look as if they
have been there for several years. Many homeowners take
this approach knowing that in one or two years their two-
foot high shrub when planted will grow to six feet or more
and spread equally as wide. Trimming and or removing some
of the shrubs will be necessary as everything matures.
