Gardening Is Just So Organic!

The gardening season will be upon us before you know it!
So let's plan for it now. If you're anything like me, you
won't be able to keep from grabbing the string, rake and
shovel once the days are longer than the nights. Leave the
perennials where they are, but what about the rest of the
garden?
On the subject of sowing seeds, let's keep that in mind
when it's time to give your friends gifts. Why not give
them garden related gifts now (plant the seeds) and watch
them give YOU gardening related gifts in return (reap the
reward.) Dropping some hints about what you might need
for the garden doesn't hurt either.
Gardens always need something. When it comes to gifts for
the gardener, you can hone in on their special interests.
Or you can come up with something that's useful no matter
what their particular passion.
For the do-it-yourself gardener there are small indoor and
larger outdoor greenhouses. They require some assembly,
but will yield hours of fun putting seeds into the soil,
and watching the first delicate green sprouts emerge.
There are leaf shredders for the gardener who values
composting. These are great if the person has a large
lawn with lots of trees. The shedder makes small fragments
out of the fall leaves, and by spring you have a heavy,
wet compost heap that's easy to turn.
Then there are the composting drums. The two vented
sections bolt together and will put much needed air into
the compost as you rotate the drum.
Even your apartment-dwelling friends deserve gardening
gifts. A patio or balcony practically begs for window or
railing boxes or pedestal plant holders. Accessorize with
a bag of potting soil and a gift certificate to the local
gardening center so your gardener can pick out their
plants of choice.
Need to think even smaller? There are small, bread box
size "greenhouses" where seedlings can be grown. Later
they can be transplanted into bigger pots. You can also
get windowsill "greenhouse" pots in which you can grow
herbs or flowers from start to finish. A fresh sprig of
basil is just the thing for flavoring a favorite dish!
And, if all else fails, there is always the "care
package," consisting of general items that are always
useful. Get a basket and fill it with a variety of
goodies including a new trowel, gardening gloves,
foam/rubber knee pads for the hours on hard ground, and
insect repellant. Then, for inspiration, add some silk
flowers and some real flower seed packets.
Gardening presents are a great way to connect with each
other as well as with the earth that nourishes us all.
